Four Language Learning Apps

1. Duolingo

Duolingo, if what they claim is true, is the most popular language learning app. The app is free and with less than 100 MB of download, you can create your profile and start learning a language right away. Currently there are 30 million English learners in the app.

The process of learning is very easy to understand. There modules and each of them has vocabulary and grammar rules for you to learn. Activities contain listening, translating and writing. Repetition is also a key factor. As you move forward, the app tracks your progress and if one of your module knowledge is weakens, it warns you so that you can practice it again and strengthen your skill. You can also set daily goals and discuss the language rules in Duolingo forum.

This app is very similar to Duolingo. The process is just a bit different. The first thing I realized was that Busuu is more explanatory. Rather than letting you to deduce the rules, it gives them clearly.

This app has an also a feature which makes the process a lot favorable. It can create a study plan for you which you can select the desired level of language. It also tells you the time when you can achieve your goal. Of course, the more you study the quicker you learn. However, you have to pay to unlock this feature. This app also lets you connect with other learners and the natives of the language you are learning. You can get help from them as you can help them learn the language you already know.

Memrise is a great helper for language learning. Although, it is not like Duolingo or Busuu. The previous apps I mentioned are enough for you to learn the language alone. However, Memrise is not. Or it is but it is not as good at it as others are. Its focus is to help you memorize phrases or vocabulary.

You can think of this app as flashcards with some extras. The extras are the videos and the audios of the phrases, pronunciation help and the ease of tracking what you have learned.

What makes Mondly great is how it uses new technological advancements in teaching a language. It uses AI, VR and AR in the process. This makes the app and also the learning more appealing. For people who are struggling and getting bored easily, this app is great. You can chat with a bot, practice ordering a drink in a restaurant with VR and you can summon an animated teacher in your room with the AR technology. This app is really worth to try.
